AN AFTERNOON OF
TALES POETRY COMEDY TALKS MUSIC
A show brought to you by John Gorman and Sue Povall, The Wirral Wonderers will have you singing, laughing and lost in your imaginations ... but please come back!
Once a month, now at The Quirky Community Hub in Hoylake, Wirral, we invite you to join us on a Saturday afternoon for music, musings and tales of the unexpected.
John shares witticisms from his extensive career in the entertainment world, starting with his days with The Scaffold. Sue is a local storyteller and tells stories inspired by her love of the fantastical and her travels around the world.
Each month, John and Sue are joined by local performers, such as musician Paul Rowlands, comedy writer Mike Haskins, storytellers Andy Johnson, Mary Rickett and Tim Ditchburn. We are delighted, however, that the pool of performers is ever widening as more people come to and enjoy our shows.
All shows are 2 - 4 pm and entry is £5 on the door.
The shows are raising money to support The Quirky Community Hub.
The remaining shows in 2024 are: 27th July, 21st September, 26th October, 23rd November, 21st December.
Check the Wirral Wonderers Facebook Page for up-to-date information.
Wirral Wonderers in the press:
Wirral Globe, December 2022
“Always a great afternoon at the Williamson Art Gallery. 2 hours of great entertainment – stories, poetry and humour – pure escapism. An opportunity to meet up with friends too, have a cuppa and sit back and enjoy. All for a great cause, Claire House. I love it … must go to more venues too.”
Elaine Ball
“As well as providing entertainment, these events create a feeling of togetherness and community, as storytelling has done throughout the ages. The material often resonates with life experiences that many of the audience members will share, and I have often seen people genuinely moved by the material presented.”

A Review of Wirral Wonderers, 15th April 2023 by Al Peters, Blues Musician and Poet
‘Once upon a time’ or should I say ‘this afternoon in time’ I came across the Wirral Wonderers happily ensconced in the Williamson Art Gallery in Birkenhead raising funds for Claire House Childrens Hospice.
Lo and behold I was treated to a Saturday afternoon of interesting characters in the performance of Music, Poetry and Storytelling.
Hosts, storyteller Sue Povall and writer and comedian John Gorman have encompassed this event to showcase the creative talents of local artists in an intimate room surrounded by great visual art.
This event was well attended and people were enthralled by the artistry on display not just in the gallery but by the performances especially of original material.
John Gorman happily donated various Scaffold items, CD’s, a vinyl EP, Special Editions of Magazines and a Billboard Poster to special guest Cora Shafto – Community Fundraiser for Claire House Childrens Hospice!
He also entertained us with his techno pun ‘Google, Google Google’ that set the standard of fun, laughter and audience participation.
Paul Rowlands previously warmed up the audience on guitar and vocals with sing along choruses from his Kellogg’s Songbook.
This professional creative afternoon continued apace with Mike Haskins reading from his book ‘Teaching Dogs to Drive’ with visual projections that had the audience in stitches. Plenty of Wuffs there!
Andy Johnson’s emotive story depicted images of those southern Welsh hills with its twists and turns like the characters he portrayed that fortunately, had a happy ending!
Tom George fellow street poet and tunesmith with whom I have worked with on several occasions had the audience finger poppin’ to say the least. A Cool Dude!
Storytelling comes into a special domain as a means to communicate through words and expression when in the hands of Wirral Wonderers MC Sue Povall who with hands raised told the tale of the ‘Woodsman and his wife who spun round the kitchen with joy. As they passed the cauldron, the wife caught her foot on her husband’s ankle and she flew into the air and down into the cauldron landing with a clatter, a rattle and a pop and pffffff…..ttttttt of pinky purple light’.
If you want to know what happens next you must catch the Wirral Wonderers on Saturday 20th May 2023 2-4pm to see if they all ‘Lived Happy Ever After’?
There is lovely food and drinks served in the Williamson Café, before and after the performance and during the short interval.
I hope to see you there?
